IDQ Navigator

1. Cos'è e come funziona

6. Veicoli e opzioni del percorso

Veicolo

Menu › Veicolo: Auto, Moto, Camion/camper, Bicicletta, A piedi.

Opzioni

Avvia, Termina

Cosa vedi mentre navighi

Voce

Passaggi a livelloOpenStreetMap
Dossi (solo pillola; la voce parla solo se vai oltre i 50 km/h)OpenStreetMap
Controlli mobili segnalati (validi 2 ore)Altri utenti, serve internet
Incidenti (2 ore), traffico (1 ora), strade chiuse (12 ore), pericoli (4 ore)Altri utenti, serve internet

Li trovi in Menu › Itinerari e tracce › Itinerari salvati. Toccando un itinerario puoi:

Posizioni salvate

14. Condividere e importare

Condividere

Su itinerari e tracce, Condividi chiede cosa mandare:

Consiglio: scarica "Italia intera".

Anche all'estero

Cerca servizi e negozi

Mappa in 2D o 3D

All features in detail

All the features of the app, explained step by step.

1. What it is and how it works

IDQ Navigator is a navigation app for Android that works without internet: the maps come from OpenStreetMap and are downloaded once onto the phone, and routes are calculated directly by the phone. The voice guidance (and the whole app) speaks your language: Italian, English, French, German or Spanish, with a male or female voice.

Internet is only needed to download and update the maps, to send and receive reports from other users (mobile checks, accidents, traffic...) and to share.

2. First steps

  1. Location permission: the first time you open the app it asks to use the GPS. Without it the map is visible but you cannot navigate. Choose "While using the app" or "Always": with "Always", navigation and recording continue even with the screen off.
  2. Notification permission: needed for the fixed notification during navigation, recording and map downloads.
  3. Download the maps: Menu › Offline maps › Manage maps. Choose Whole Italy (recommended): it contains the map, routes and address search. It takes several GB: better on Wi-Fi.
  4. When the download finishes, the map appears by itself and you are ready.
The shortest tutorial: search for an address at the top, tap the result, tap Start.

3. The map

4. Choosing the destination

With search

Type in the bar at the top: a city, a street, a place (e.g. "colosseo roma"), an address with house number (e.g. "viale ceccarini 106 riccione"). Results are sorted by relevance and then by distance from you: if you write "via", "viale", "corso"... or a house number, streets and addresses come first, otherwise names identical to what you typed come first (even far away, such as "stazione di Bologna"). Tap a result to calculate the route.

With your voice

Tap the microphone on the right of the search bar and say the address.

With a long press

Long-press a point on the map: it becomes the destination. Useful for places without an address (a car park, a path, a spot at sea).

As soon as the destination is chosen, the app calculates the route (usually in less than a second) and shows kilometres, duration and arrival time. The route is the green line.

5. Choosing another starting point

By default you start from your GPS position. To plan a distant route (for example from home while you are elsewhere): Menu › Route › Choose another starting point, then search or long-press on the map. The route is calculated from that point. To really drive with Start the start must go back to the GPS: Start: back to GPS.

6. Vehicles and route options

Vehicle

Menu › Vehicle: Car, Motorcycle, Truck / camper, Bicycle, On foot. Each vehicle calculates a different route (bicycles use cycle paths and quiet roads, on foot you can also use paths and pedestrian areas) and has its own symbol. When you change vehicle the screen restarts and the route is recalculated. You cannot change vehicle while navigating.

Truck and camper: with this vehicle the item Truck / camper dimensions... appears in the Vehicle submenu. Enter height, width, length and weight: the route avoids low bridges, narrow roads and weight limits (where OpenStreetMap knows them).

Options

Menu › Route: Avoid tolls, Avoid motorways, Avoid ferries. They are check marks: tap to switch on or off, the route is recalculated immediately. "Avoid" means "prefer something else": if there is no alternative, the road may still be used.

Intermediate stops

With a destination chosen, Menu › Route › Intermediate stops lets you add as many stops as you like: tap Add stop, then search for a place or long-press on the map. In the list you can move stops with ▲ ▼ or remove them with ✕: the route is recalculated by itself. On the map the stops are numbered and, while driving, at each stop the voice says you have arrived and then continues to the next one. Stops are saved with the route.

Navigation: the car stays in the centre and the map moves; green route, limits, alerts and voice.

Start, Stop

What you see while navigating

Voice

The app speaks a little before every manoeuvre ("In 300 meters turn right...") and again near the turn. With the voice off, the written directions and the beeps remain. Switch it on and off from Menu › Settings › Voice guidance. For each language the voice must be installed on the phone (Android Settings › Text-to-speech › Google › Install voice data).

Off route

If you take a wrong road the app notices after a few seconds, says "Recalculating route" and calculates another one from where you are. It works even without internet.

Tunnels and weak GPS

If the GPS signal is missing (tunnels, buildings) the app keeps showing the estimated position on the route, at the previous speed, and writes "Weak GPS signal: position estimated". A single wrong GPS point does not trigger a recalculation; when the signal returns, the position realigns by itself.

Arrival

When you arrive "You have arrived!" appears and the navigation closes by itself.

Notification

During navigation there is a fixed notification: Android needs it so it does not stop the app when you switch to other screens or turn off the display.

8. Small window and screen on

9. Map alerts

Symbols appear on the map and along the route; when you get close, at the bottom right there is a pill with the nearest one (type, distance, limit) and the app announces it by voice, with a beep closer up. The alerts from the downloaded data also work without internet.

AlertWhere it comes from
Fixed speed cameras (with the limit when known)OpenStreetMap + user reports
Tutor (average speed): start, end, live average and alert if you exceed itOpenStreetMap
Red light camerasOpenStreetMap
ZTL gates (restricted traffic zones)OpenStreetMap (the gates, not the whole zones)
Level crossingsOpenStreetMap
Speed bumps (pill only; the voice speaks only if you go above 50 km/h)OpenStreetMap
Reported mobile checks (valid 2 hours)Other users, internet needed
Accidents (2 hours), traffic (1 hour), road closures (12 hours), hazards (4 hours)Other users, internet needed
OpenStreetMap data is made by volunteers: it is partial. Not all speed cameras are mapped and mobile checks and ZTL zones may be missing. Always drive respecting road signs and limits.

Closed roads: when other users report a closed road on your route, the app looks for a different road: it does so both when you choose the destination ("Route changed: avoids 1 reported road closures") and while driving, with an automatic recalculation and a voice warning. Internet is needed to receive the reports.

Switching alert types on and off

Menu › Map alerts: one check mark for each type. Off = no symbol and no alert. On foot and by bike the alerts meant for cars do not appear.

10. Reporting an alert

The Report button with big buttons, and the "is it still there?" question when you pass another user's report.

You help other drivers, and they help you. While driving, at the bottom right, there is the Report button: tap it and a panel with big buttons appears, easy to read and to tap. Checkpoint and Fixed speed camera are at the top, highlighted; below you find:

You can also report while stopped: Menu › Report. The report takes your position at that moment. If there is no internet it stays on the phone and is sent by itself as soon as the network is back.

Mobile checks, checkpoints, accidents, traffic, blocked roads and hazards are visible to others immediately, for a limited time. Fixed speed cameras, Tutor and "no longer there" are not shown to others: they are checked separately. Everything is anonymous (see Data and privacy).

"Is it still there?"

When you pass where another user reported something temporary (mobile check, checkpoint, accident, traffic, closed road, hazard), the app asks whether it is still there, with two big buttons Yes and No. The answers keep the map up to date: if more people say it is gone, the report disappears. For fixed speed cameras, Tutor and other fixed things, other users are not asked for confirmation: they are checked separately.

11. Search nearby

Menu › Search nearby: Petrol stations (with available fuels, LPG, methane...), Charging points (with connector type), Car parks, Service areas. The list is sorted by distance from you; tap an item to see it on the map and calculate the route. The first time the app asks to download a small file (about 15 MB); after that it works offline and updates itself on Wi-Fi.

12. Saved routes

A route is a destination (with start, stops and vehicle) that you want to find again.

  1. Choose the destination and wait for km and minutes to appear.
  2. Tap Save (or Menu › Route › Save this route) and give it a name.

You find them in Menu › Routes and tracks › Saved routes. By tapping a route you can:

Saved positions

To save an exact point without creating a route, tap the pin at the bottom right (or Menu › Routes and tracks › Save my position): the app suggests the address, if it knows it, or the date, and you can type the name you want straight away. A long press on the pin (or Saved positions) shows the list: from there you can go there, see it on the map, rename it, share it (address, coordinates and link) or delete it.

13. Recorded tracks

A track is the recording of where you have been, useful for hikes, motorcycle or bike rides. No start or destination needed.

Tracks are standard GPX files: Strava, Komoot, OsmAnd, Organic Maps and almost all hiking apps can read them.

14. Sharing and importing

Sharing

On routes and tracks, Share asks what to send:

Many messaging apps discard the text when there is an attached file: that is why you choose one thing at a time. To send both, share twice.

The address is obtained offline from the search; if there is none near the point, the coordinates are still there.

Importing

When you receive a GPX file (in a chat, by email...), tap it and choose IDQ Navigator. A track goes to Recorded tracks; a route opens as a route with the start from your GPS.

15. Offline maps and updates

What is in the catalogue

For each area (Whole Italy, North-West, North-East, Centre, South, Islands) there are three files: map, routes and address search.

Tip: download "Whole Italy". The app uses only one group of files at a time: with a single region, routes only work inside it.

Downloading and deleting

Menu › Offline maps › Manage maps. The download runs in the background with a notification (and a Cancel button), continues with the screen off, resumes by itself after a network drop and checks that the files are intact. If you use mobile data and the package is over 200 MB, the app offers to wait for Wi-Fi: the download starts by itself as soon as there is a Wi-Fi network. Before downloading it checks the free space (updates need double, because the old file stays until the new one is verified). If the phone restarts during the download, it resumes by itself.

Updates

The maps are updated every month. When opened, the app checks whether there are new ones and notifies you (also with a notification). The Update button downloads only what has changed.

Menu › Offline maps › Update automatically: if on, the phone downloads updates by itself, but only on Wi-Fi and while charging, without using your data.

16. Settings

17. Data and privacy

18. Common problems

ProblemWhat to do
"GPS position not available yet"Go outdoors and wait a few seconds; check that the phone's location is on.
The map is empty or greyDownload the maps (section 15). If you already have, reopen the app.
The route is not foundThe destination must be inside the area of the downloaded maps. Try "Whole Italy".
No voiceCheck in Settings that the voice is on and the volume is up; install the Google text-to-speech voice for your language.
Navigation stops with the screen offGrant "Always" location and remove the app from the phone's battery saving.
I do not see mobile checks or accidentsInternet and at least one recent report near you are needed. Also check that the type is on in Map alerts.
The speed limit is missing or dashedThe data is not on OpenStreetMap: the dashes indicate a presumed limit.
The download does not startCheck the connection and the free space: several GB are needed.

If the problem remains, write to info@idq-developer.com saying what you were doing and the app version (Menu › About).

19. Online services, place search and 2D/3D

Search "diesel station" or "pizzeria": the nearest ones, with price, distance and opening hours.

From Menu › Settings: 3D (tilted) or 2D (flat) map.

With internet

Without downloading anything, when you are online the app uses our server: the map, address search, route calculation (with speed limits, alerts and closed roads already included) and rerouting when you leave the route. If there is no network or the server does not answer, the app switches by itself to the offline maps you downloaded, if you have them.

Abroad too

When you are online, routes and search also cover Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Croatia, France, Germany and Spain. Next to every result you see the country, so you can tell the right one at a glance.

Search for services and shops

Type what you are looking for in the search bar: diesel station, petrol station, charging point, restaurant, pizzeria, bar, pharmacy, hospital, parking, ATM, supermarket, hotel, campsite... The nearest ones appear; if you already have a route, the ones along the route. For fuel stations you see the updated price (Italian Ministry open data, self-service and served) of the chosen fuel. Every result shows its distance from your position, in metres or kilometres.

2D or 3D map

In Menu › Settings turn 3D map (tilted) on or off: in 3D the map is tilted and buildings are raised; in 2D it is flat. Your choice is saved.

While navigating

The car stays still at the centre of the screen and the map moves; the route is green. Voice guidance is turned on and off in Menu › Settings › Voice guidance: when it is off you only hear beeps.

20. Credits

IDQ Navigator shows the way but does not replace caution: always follow the Highway Code and road signs, and do not use the phone while driving.

Avec l'appui long

Start, Beenden

Was Sie beim Navigieren sehen

Stimme

15. Offline-Karten und Aktualisierungen

Was im Katalog ist

Für jedes Gebiet (Ganz Italien, Nordwest, Nordost, Mitte, Süd, Inseln) gibt es drei Dateien: Karte, Routen und Adresssuche.

Tipp: Laden Sie „Ganz Italien“ herunter.

6. Vehículos y opciones de ruta

Vehículo

Menú › Vehículo: Coche, Moto, Camión / autocaravana, Bicicleta, A pie.

Opciones

Menú › Ruta: Evitar peajes, Evitar autopistas, Evitar transbordadores.

Pasos a nivelOpenStreetMap
Accidentes (2 horas), tráfico (1 hora), carreteras cortadas (12 horas), peligros (4 horas)Otros usuarios, hace falta internet

Consejo: descarga "Toda Italia".
